Choosing a run capacitor

A failing run capacitor is the single most common cause of an AC that hums but won't start. Match the µF rating printed on your old part exactly; the voltage rating may be equal or higher (440V safely replaces 370V, never the reverse). Dual capacitors (e.g. 45+5 µF) serve the compressor and fan from one can — the larger value is the compressor (HERM), the smaller is the fan (FAN), and the C terminal is common. A bulging or leaking top means it has failed, but a capacitor can drift out of tolerance while still looking perfect, so measure it: anything more than 6% below its rating should be replaced.
