Choosing a contactor

A contactor is the relay that switches line voltage to the compressor and condenser fan when the thermostat calls. Pitted or welded contacts are the usual failure: the unit hums, the fan stutters, or the compressor never energises. Match three things — coil voltage (24V on almost every residential system, driven by the low-voltage transformer), pole count (a 1-pole switches one leg and is common on single-phase residential; 2-pole switches both), and amperage, which must meet or exceed the rating plate. A higher amp rating is always safe; a lower one is not.
